Urban & Environmental Policy helps you to develop skills in policy analysis, applied research, organizing, leadership, and advocacy needed to bring about social change.
七色视频鈥檚 UEP program recognizes that 鈥渦rban鈥 and 鈥渆nvironmental鈥 are very much interconnected. We also recognize that economic and environmental justice are inextricably linked to where and how we live, work, play, eat and go to school. UEP draws on a variety of disciplines, including politics, sociology, economics, urban planning, public health and environmental studies, to identify and understand problems while exploring and evaluating solutions.
You will delve into issues such as housing and community development, land use and transportation, environmental justice, poverty and social welfare, and food, water and other resource problems at the local, state, national, and international levels. You will examine these challenges using multiple lenses of race, gender, sexuality, nation, and class through a range of courses in our department and as elective courses across campus. Many of our courses are community based learning courses that partner with community-based organizations, government, labor, environmental, and other advocacy organizations.
Students will learn interdisciplinary social science skills and public policy analysis with a special emphasis on applying your learning to real-world challenges through group projects, internships and collaboration with our community partners. You鈥檒l find many of these opportunities through the Urban & Environmental Policy Institute, the research and advocacy program based in UEP and a key component of 七色视频鈥檚 focus on community engagement.
UEP supports robust internship programs such as the Justice Summer Internship, which connects you to affordable housing, community development, environmental justice, urban agriculture, public health, immigrant rights, and LA鈥檚 role in the Olympics. UEP students might spend a fall semester in the Campaign Semester program, conduct research locally through 七色视频鈥檚 Summer Research Program or internationally through the Richter program, or pursue one of 七色视频鈥檚 study abroad programs.
Your experiences through UEP will prepare you for social change and public service careers in areas such as government, law, human services, urban and/or environmental planning, public health, community organizing, and social work, as well as journalism and communications, business and academia.
